Amazing Tree Cushion - Made with Crafted Appliqué - francenadeau.com

This is another project I have made with the Crafted Appliqué method. For this one, I have used a pattern that is included in the book. Those who already have the book may have noticed that I have changed the name of the tree. I changed it because I took the pattern in the size it was provided in the book, instead of increasing it (as instructed) to make a much bigger tree. And I did not place the leaves in the same manner. In the end, I did not want to create confusion by using the name Lara (of Buzzin Bumble) has chosen, as the result is slightly different from Lara’s piece of work.

The Walking Tree quilt is an amazing piece of work. When I perused Lara’s book for the first time, I knew that this pattern would be perfect for my father’s birthday present. But I also knew the present should be practical, which is why I made a cushion.

To make this Amazing Tree Cushion, I used two old cotton shorts. Their colors (light and dark greens) were perfect for the theme (I know that they look more like greys in the picture). After assembling the pieces, I added machine embroidery over all the seams. The trunk was cut in an embroidered polyester, while the leaves are of cotton (old and new).

The tree on cardboard is an Amazing Tree Birthday Card I have made to go along the cushion, also with the Crafted Appliqué method.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if trees where that colorful all year round?

This birthday card was made with Lara’s (who blog at BuzzinBumble) new and amazing method called Crafted Appliqué. There is a magnificent tree pattern in her book, made from fabric and sewn unto fabric. Which is what the book is about: a new method to make fabric appliqués. But I quickly realised that this method would also work wonderfully for sewing fabric unto paper. So I decided to experiment.

I traced the tree pattern on tracing paper, exactly as it was in the book, without increasing the size. It was just perfect for a pre-cut and store-bought cardboard card. I cut all the necessary pieces and place them on the cardboard. Then I sew everything into place with my sewing machine.

This is how the card looked like inside. Do not worry, I covered all the threads with a beautiful sheet of paper.

This project took so little time that I made two.
