This is Christmas Star for embroidery—based on my Christmas Star, mug rug and coaster. Three superposed ten-point stars, colored with embroidery thread. Regular thread or shinny metallic thread.

Two stitches were used for the star itself: the satin stitch and the stem stitch. The ornament was embellished with the chain stitch. A tutorial for the three stitches can be found on my web site.

The embroidery measures 10.5 cm x 10.5 cm / 4 1/8” x 4 1/8”. The pattern is available in my Craftsy Pattern Store (US$1.00; CA$1.29 these days).

Christmas Star – pattern for mug rug and coaster

This is my newest pattern—Christmas Star. Three superposed ten-point stars. I have used wool for the stars and the binding, which gives a warm and cosy feeling to these mug rugs and coasters. As the stars have that many points, I suggest the use of a non-fraying fabric. Wool, fleecy, knit, flannel…

Christmas Star can be stitched either by hand or with a sewing machine. Patterns in real size are included, as well as schemas with measurements in real size and many pictures. The difficulty level is “advanced” because there are no step-by-step instructions for sewing the appliques, quilting and binding. But it’s only a matter of stitching the appliqués into place. Pretty easy in the end.

The mug rug measures 15 x 23 cm / 5 7/8″ x 9″. The coaster measures 13 cm / 5 1/8″ square. The pattern is available in my Craftsy Pattern Store (US$2.00; CA$2.54 these days).

Woolen Star Christmas Ornament – A tutorial

Woolen Star Christmas Ornament - tutorial at francenadeau.comWoolen Star Christmas Ornament - tutorial at francenadeau.comWoolen Star Christmas Ornament - tutorial at francenadeau.comWoolen Star Christmas Ornament - tutorial at francenadeau.com

Stars for Christmas. Just as for the Woolen Hearts, made of wool fabric and decorated with a few simple things.

The pdf tutorial (with pictures) can be found here, in French and in English.

Woolen Star Christmas Ornament

Material

  • paper
  • pencil and scissors
  • wool fabric
  • metallic thread and needle
  • buttons
  • raphia
  • beads
  • filling material of your choice (I used scraps of the wool fabric)

Instructions

  1. With the star pattern (see pdf), cut two stars in your wool fabric.
  2. Place the two pieces together, wrong sides together. Sew with the metallic thread, using the blanket stitch. Make sure you leave an opening to insert the filling material. If you make the version with the beads all around the star, add a bead to your stitching every two blanket stitches.
  3. Insert your filling material and close the opening with the same thread and stitch.
  4. Cut a piece of raphia, about 30 cm / 12” long. Sew the raphia at the end of one tip.
  5. Sew a button on top (I used the metallic thread).
  6. Cut a piece of raphia, about 22 cm / 8” long. Insert it under the button and secure it into place by making a bow. You can cut the ends of the bow to make them even.
