This is my newest pattern—Christmas Star. Three superposed ten-point stars. I have used wool for the stars and the binding, which gives a warm and cosy feeling to these mug rugs and coasters. As the stars have that many points, I suggest the use of a non-fraying fabric. Wool, fleecy, knit, flannel…
Christmas Star can be stitched either by hand or with a sewing machine. Patterns in real size are included, as well as schemas with measurements in real size and many pictures. The difficulty level is “advanced” because there are no step-by-step instructions for sewing the appliques, quilting and binding. But it’s only a matter of stitching the appliqués into place. Pretty easy in the end.
The mug rug measures 15 x 23 cm / 5 7/8″ x 9″. The coaster measures 13 cm / 5 1/8″ square. The pattern is available in my Craftsy Pattern Store (US$2.00; CA$2.54 these days).
This is my latest pattern for mug rugs and coasters. This is a Blue House surrounded by Spring flowers starting to bloom. I had fun adding the flowers, but they are optional.
The Blue House can be made with the appliqué method or the paper-piecing method. I stitched the appliques by hand, but this could be done with a sewing machine. The binding was sewn with a sewing machine on top and by hand on the back. Of course, the binding can entirely be done by machine. You can see examples for both methods in the pictures (mug rug: appliqué; coaster: paper piecing).
The pattern is available in my Craftsy Pattern Store. To make these items I used both new and old fabrics. They are cotton, except for the dark blue that is a polyester. They would also look great if made with only quilting cotton. For more details about this pattern, just click here.
